Republican Women History

“Tireless workers” for the election of Republican candidates, Ellen Tschache and Elaine Hume, held the record of securing the most members for the Club-100, and later, Pearl Windsor devoted her time to securing 500 members. GCRW members Winifred Lovelace, Donna Murdock and Marie Fellows held three very successful art shows which netted fine financial returns for the Republican Women’s Club, besides offering good public relations for Republicans. Marilyn Johns, another tireless worker for the Party, served as President and also organized “Garagaramas” as avid fundraisers. Marilyn assisted in “getting out the vote” on election days and with “telephone coverage” of the city. She also helped on Lincoln Day dinners whenever possible. Helen Johnson, past President, was a chief supporter of the Party for several years, both financially and as a promoter and always presented interesting programs, which have gone far in building the Club to its first place rank in the state. Nell Feddes (President 1982-1983) joined the Club in 1978, and notes that membership was $5 a year and lunch was $2.50, served on the mezzanine at the Baxter Hotel.

Republican women are the Party’s grassroots activists. The Bozeman community has benefited from the volunteer services of GCRW’s members through the Caring For America and Barbara Bush Literacy programs.

Today, members continue to host candidate events, raise money, donate funds, operate phone banks and get-out-the-vote efforts, and run campaign schools. Our programs intend to highlight aware to Republican candidate campaigns and issues in our community and state. We participate in fairs and parades to further our get-out-the-vote efforts and register more people to vote Republican.

From the memories of GCRW Members Nell Feddes, Joy Shellenberg, the Secretary’s Minutes,
as well as Ona Wright’s “Partial History of Workers in the Republican Party”.

Eleven States became the charter states of NFRW in 1938. Montana was one of the eleven. It is believed that the Gallatin County Republican Women’s Club forged in the 1930’s and was one of the founding clubs where the State Republican Women’s Club officially organized in 1938.
